BARE, ISOLATED, WILD :: THOUGHTS FROM THE DESERT

BARE, ISOLATED, WILD :: THOUGHTS FROM THE DESERT

bare isolated wild thoughts from the desert - photos from the desert - desert photoshoot - no basis in reality

Driving out into the desert surrounding Flagstaff is always an inspiring and surreal experience. The landscape changes drastically from tall, mountain pines to rocky, desolate desert in such a short time. It is gorgeous out here. Bare, isolated, wild; yet, moving, stirring the soul, stimulating. The rocks form an organic and sculptural architecture against the ever-changing desert sky. Here, you can see why artists like Georgia O’Keeffe were intrigued by this landscape, and sought to capture it with paint and film.

Out in this setting, my mind runs wild with thoughts from the desert of exploring, traveling, creating, doing, being. I want to go everywhere, experience new things, create thought-provoking art, do amazing things in the world. How do I set about achieving all that this barren landscape stirs up inside of me? Why do I feel this way out here? What about the desert makes us have these deep thoughts? The vastness of our surroundings or the grand views of the sky could have something to do with it.

Currently, my life is a series of lists and schedules, but throughout the day I take care of those items one by one. Some mornings I look at this list and feel like the amount that needs to be accomplished will be an impossible feat, but crossing each item off the list throughout the day is so satisfying.

I’d like to apply this same mentality to my larger goals and dreams. Keeping in check the to dos, and looking at the larger picture of what I’ve really set out to accomplish. Here are some tactics I’m using to achieve this.

WRITE IT DOWN

Do you have a list of what you want to achieve? Fill this list with the things that you want to achieve in your lifetime. Don’t worry about what other people want to do with their time, or what they find important. Each person will have unique aspirations and dreams. Your list shouldn’t follow what other people think it should include, or what you think other people think it should include! Your list should be filled with things that excite and thrill you!

TICK OFF THE FIRST GOAL ON YOUR LIST

I’m currently working on the first item on my list – getting invited to a show at New York Fashion Week. It’s probably a long way off from this moment, but starting this blog was the first step towards achieving that goal. With each goal or dream, there might be steps that you need to tick off first.

bare isolated wild thoughts from the desert - photos from the desert - desert photoshoot - no basis in reality

Don’t be afraid to change the items on your list as time goes on. Nothing is set in stone, and as we go along in life our passions and goals will change. Priorities will change with life circumstances, and they are totally allowed to. Whatever your goals may be, they are unique to you. As you strive to achieve these personal hopes and dreams and turn them into realities, leave the space to add new aspirations to work towards.

What are some of your major life goals and dreams? Book that trip! Order that item you’ve been lusting after!

Couldnt agree more with this statement “Don’t be afraid to change the items on your list as time goes on. Nothing is set in stone.” Indeed, we have to be flexible, and adaptable to survive. By the way, as always, you look lovely. I love how you pair that black dress with those cute boots.

  35. Oh Meredith, this post felt so relatable in my current vital moment… I do have a long to-do list and I am making sure I am able to tick some of those things off of it soon, because we only live once! I had a similar experience when we visited the Sahara desert a few years ago, an awe to how beautiful and inspiring nature can be, and a need to paint that blank sandy canvas before me.
Hope you have a great week, dearest
