GRAPEFRUIT OLD FASHIONED: A DELICIOUS SUMMER DRINK

delicious summer drink - grapefruit - old fashioned - no basis in reality

There’s pretty much nothing better in my world than a day spent with my favorite ladies. Especially when it ends with a delicious beverage. I have found so many wonderful drink recipes this summer and it was the perfect chance to try this new Grapefruit Old Fashioned recipe. Grapefruits have been a staple citrus in my summer diets since I was a little girl picking them out of my aunt and uncle’s trees in Phoenix, AZ. And, I must admit, I’m a whiskey girl. This mix was the best of both worlds. The Grapefruit Old Fashioned is a delicious summer drink that would work for any occasion.

RECIPE

2 Parts Whiskey or Bourbon

3/4 Parts Grapefruit Honey Syrup

1 or 2 Dashes of Grapefruit Bitters

1 Sugar Cube

(optional if you like it a little sweeter)

GRAPEFRUIT HONEY SYRUP

1/4 Cup Fresh Squeezed Grapefruit Juice (strained)

1/4 Cup Honey

1/4 Water

Combine each into a small saucepan and continue to stir until the honey dissolves and it makes a syrup. It needs to cool before being used. (Don’t want a warm old fashioned on a hot summer day). I made the syrup the day before and stored it in an air tight carafe so it would be ready to go when I met up with my gals.  Since the hardest part was done it was really easy to put the drinks together on the spot!

Mixing up the rest of the drink is a piece of cake. Place a sugar cube at the bottom of the rocks glass and then added a couple dashes of Fee Brothers Grapefruit Bitters.  I like to break up the sugar cube doused in bitters – makes me feel a little more like a real mixologist (I am far from that). You can leave the sugar cube out if you want the cocktail to turn out a little less sweet.

Next, add the simple syrup and stir it up so they all combine. Use a large ice cube placed at the bottom of the glass and pour the bourbon or whiskey over the cube. I used Knob Creek Bourbon for this one, but I’m also a big fan of Wild Turkey for a more thrifty bourbon option. Any rye whiskey would work as well.

These cocktails were garnished with a simple slice of the grapefruit, but I think it would be lovely with a sprig of rosemary. (I’ll let you know if I give it a try) The last step is to sit back and enjoy your drink.

This rendition of an old fashioned was amazing. It is now my go to drink for the rest of forever. Okay maybe not forever, but at least for the rest of the summer. I love any chance to mix up a new drink. I think this would go great with any meal and would be another perfect option for a dinner party because it can be put together so quickly. The Grapefruit Old Fashioned was truly a delicious summer drink.

Cheers!
